Vibrant, eye-catching and fun, some of our favourite treasures here at the archive are the multitude of science fiction themed images. The core of the collection is built largely of small-format pulp fiction magazines published between the 1920s and 1950s, originally acquired by our co-founder Hilary Evans. Titles such as Amazing Stories, Thrilling Wonder Stories and Fantastic Adventures published stories solely within the science and fantasy fiction genre and their cheap paper pages were enclosed in vivid and melodramatic covers featuring large-brained aliens, mechanical terrors rampaging through the streets and exploding planets. Back covers gave illustrated premonitions of future technologies, some astute, some bordering on the absurd.
To further complement the magazine collection, a greater expanse of themed images can be found in other library sources, such as children's sticker albums, novels and colourful advertisements. The archive also holds a compendium of photographs and illustrations of well-known authors, whose most famous works were in the realms of science fiction. This year's major expansion of film and cinema imagery has further enhanced our content offering on this subject; thousands of film stills, portraits and posters on both the most popular and also the most obscure (!) sci-fi films and television programmes are now available to license for editorial use.
